Alpha, a twelve year old girl, will have to face her fears and pass into adulthood, in a whirlwind of drums, howlings and fire.

A group of children live in nature with remains of the past. They train. Wrestle. Hunt. They climb on the trees.
Τhey fish, swim and  wallow in the rivers.
They use animal signals to alert one another.
They howl, they growl, they bark.

The theme of the film is the passage into adulthood.

Adulthood as a condition of stepping into the unknown with bravery. Α leap into the dark which is scary and risky we have to take numerous times in our life.

This is why this film applies to you, to us, to everyone.

The struggle of Alpha, it’s where the film focuses. The night before facing the great brown bear.

An action every member has to pass to profess their ability to survive on their own.
Having cold feet, feeling weak and under everyone’s  pressure, she’ll have to find the courage and trust her own power.

  • This is a chance for the global audience to get to know the greek and balkan culture.
  • In our film, we touch the intercultural theme of adulthood as the children grow up far from society’s standards and gender norms.
  • In the time we live in (Covid-19), it expresses the necessity to re-evaluate our relationship with nature and reconnect the younger generations with our heritage.

Natural & practical lighting

The Camera movement will resemble the idea of running and hunting in the forest.
It will emphasize on Alpha in order to render empathy and her sense of claustrophobia.
The film will grow darker in tone and aesthetic: Feeling of danger, wilderness of nature.

  • Children have decided to be named after the constellation of Ursa Minor which is known as the Little Bear. Alpha is the star of the tale of the constellation. Also known as the Star of the North.
  • We will use a traditional folk song, which is sung in various places around Greece. Depending on the place, the song’s lyrics vary. The version we selected is from Northern Epirus, and it’s about brave men and women fighting beasts.
  • We will escalate the pressure that Alpha feels with : suffocating close- ups, rough cuts and fast pace editing.
  • Elements of nature (soil, water, fire) and folklore culture will be used aesthetically in the film as a guideline in scenography, costume designs, cinematography, lighting and music.

As potential filming locations we’re considering River Venetikos near Pindos Mountains and Nymfaio in Amyntaio which is a Range of the Bear.

Actors training will be based on technics inspired by animal movements and signals. Through improvisation, personal research and animal observation, actors will discover their animal.

We are interested in rough natural features, diversity and gender fluidity.
We will film the bear in her natural habitat.

Through this journey of discovery, Alpha changes.
She’s ready. She’s standing on her own feet. She’s wearing a fur cape.
Her eyes locked with the beasts.
She breaths.

Now, she is the Beast Who Walks Like A Man.

The script got selected at the 3rd Olympia “Creative Ideas” Pitching Lab 2020, 23rd Olympia International Film Festival.
The award of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT) for 2020 is handed to our short live-action project.

The film will receive a sponsorship of technical services at the post production stage from STEFILM.
